I am a recovering heroin addict. I was paralyzed from using needles almost 5 years ago. I am finally off all opiates and off the needles. I used to feel like there was no way that I could ever live normally without opiates in my life. I tried many times to quit. Went to prison a couple times and lost about everything that I loved and owned. So I know that feeling of despair and hopelessness that addicts feel while going through their daily lives. And it is so hard to get yourself back together and get your life back together while trying to stay off of drugs. And society has made it very hard for addicts to get back on their feet after they get into trouble due to their addiction. Many doors are closed to them and usually they are trying to get their lives together again while being on parole or probation. Which puts a lot of stress on the addict to get it together and stay off drugs while getting it together. And addicts do not deal well with stress! First thing they will want to do is go and get high when they are confronted with stress and decisions that will effect their everyday lives. So I am really big on changing the way addicts are looked at in society. I believe if they were treated more like they are sick and they need help (treatment)

WHAT IS THE DRUG ADDICTION TREATMENT IN MENTAL HEALTH?
I believe the society has condoned drug addiction which has led it to fester and now there are several institutions set up to manage addicts. There should be a root-cause solution approach to tackle thus problem. For example, orientation and education of parents to look out for early warning signs in their young teenage children. Any withdrawn behavioral pattern should trigger immediate help to prevent addiction that because difficult to manage. There are a lot of unprescribed drugs in wrong hands and it’s very easy to find drugs on the streets. Concerted efforts should be made to wade into peddling of drugs on the streets with drastic sanctions. These measure will bring some sanity into the society as the various institutions continue to manage the addicts. I don’t think enough has been done to tackle root-causes.
