Personality disorders

People with consistent traits that cause distress or prevent the person from getting along with others are said to have personality disorders. We all go through periods where we might seem to have difficulty getting along, or even feel depressed, but these ups and downs are part of normal life.  To be considered a disorder, a pattern must be persistent, not determined by context or a situation, such as trauma or illness.

Personality disorders include:

• Paranoid personality – where the person holds unfounded suspicions about others and is irrational jealous;
• Narcissistic personality – where the person is self-absorbed and has an exaggerated sense of self-importance;
• Avoidant personality – where the person avoids relationships because of extreme sensitivity to rejection or criticism;
• Sociopathic personality (or antisocial personality) where the person lacks a sense or morality and does not form attachments. Antisocial personalities lack empathy and the ability to feel guilt or remorse. Their lack of emotionality makes them hard to deter with threat of punishment or consequences, though they do respond to reinforces that are meaningful to them. Abuse can lead to the development of antisocial personality, but there is evidence that the tendency to develop such a personality is genetic.
